About Bunraku

Bunraku, or Ningyo Johruri Bunraku puppet theatre, is a nationally important intangible cultural property and a UNESCO World Intangible Heritage. It is one of Japan’s representative traditional performing arts where a tayu narrator, a shamisen (the three-stringed spike lute) player, and puppeteers collaborate to create a unified performance.
Its origins date back to the early Edo period, when it was known as ayatsuri ningyo (puppet show) and later as ningyo joruri (puppetry). Ningyo joruri gained great popularity thanks to the Gidayu performance style established by Takemoto Gidayu and the works of Chikamatsu Monzaemon, leading to the founding of the Takemoto-za theater.
After that, the Toyotake-za theater and other puppet troupes were founded with varying success. At the end of the Edo period, a troupe formed in Osaka by Uemura Bunrakuken from Awaji came to show the most powerful presence. Its dominance was such that Bunraku, part of its founder’s name, became synonymous with the art form.
